Well just because I don’t have screen-shots for it doesn’t mean I haven’t been up to something. starting last night and then earlier this morning I sped my way through all twenty six episodes of Gokujou Seitokai. Something I originally found out about thanks to another wordpress blog Moe for moe. I keep wanting to compare it to something but all that ever comes to mind is Mai-Hime… You know school life comedy with a bit of shoujou-ai… yeah this does that. Except without the monsters and super powers and ninjas. Well the monsters anyway. Speaking of ninjas there’s something else it reminds me of… something old and fairly obscure… Samurai Girl: Real bout highschool… but that just may be the whole ninjas thing casting similarities into the picture.
Anyway… the whole show revolves around a group of students the ‘gokujou seitokai’ which if my moonspeak is half as good as I like to think it is translates to something like ‘best student council’. They have a much much longer name but I quite honestly can’t remember all of it… something like maximum authority highest shareholders something something student council… Basically they’re a group who outrank even the faculty staff. They’re split into two groups, Covert which primarily takes care of information gathering and things like that, as you’d guess it’s where the ninjas hang out… then there’s Assault the group who well acts on the gathered information. There’s some minor what the crap to it since one of the vice presidents uses a yo-yo as a weapon… but hey it’s anime we expect, require, demand things like that now don’t we? Which reminds me yes, one of the vice presidents, there’s two, one’s the head of Covert the other of Assault… which in all seriousness makes sense given the circumstances. Apparently Kanade Jinguuji, the President, is something of a rich kid and started the Miyagami girls school… and yeah. It’s kind of one of those places you used to dream up in your imagination… late? Well then there’s one of those chair things like Batman used to have in his office that’ll take you from the dormitory to the school in no-time… heck the place has an enormous cannon that’s hidden behind a chunk of hill that just moves out of the way when they want to use it. So yeah things get pretty wacky pretty quickly, more so once you through in Rino Randou the well she’s happy go lucky/brainless/clumsy/a few other stereo types… Her and Pucchan her puppet friend transfer to the school and… what’s that? Why yes, yes I did say her puppet friend… I could go into more detail about that… but it’s not really needed you see he’s a puppet, and he’s her friend, among other things. No I’m not going to clarify that part. Way too much of a spoiler… but I’ll throw you a bone, you see, Pucchan isn’t just a puppet, he’s got a mind of his own, at least while someone’s got a hand in the back of his head. Same personality and voice no matter who is trying to use him at any given time. If I had to pick a favourite from the characters… well… impossible… it’d be some form of tossup between Sayuri the glasses/quiet girl who also happens to be big into swords, which is actually one heck of a mixture of stereotypes… then there’s her friend Rein who’s the loud/happy character who sucks at class, likes to eat and gambles a lot… she’s also good at cheating at cards… Kotoha is kind of cool too even if she takes a while to show up, one of those quiet/”uninteresting” types… you know like… Yuki was in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yutsuu… except instead of being a magic alien thing she’s a ninja. I kind of thought the one teacher was cute on occasion as well, except I can’t remember either of the name’s… I remember the nurse had a very ‘a’ heavy name Wakana… that was it her first name wa sliek that too anyway that’s the nurse, nto the one I mean. I mean the othe rone, short’ish’ purple hair… her outfits make her come across as a gym teacher… Oddly enough the show had two factual ‘loli’ characters, three if we count Rein who’d only look like one, then again I’m not sure Minamo counts either but she fits the part… way immature and really really annoying… and then there was the ‘Landlady’ Maachi even though her name is used maybe twice through the series. Yeah I don’t have them on my list of characters I liked… which is abnormal, for me anyway. Usually I wind up liking the loli types but it was bound to happen. Crap I forgot someone. I like the vice president of Assault, Nanaho, and yes, I have misread that name a billion times as NanOhA I can’t help it, way too similar. But she’s your stereotype tomboy in pretty much every way except for something you wouldn’t expect and I’m not explaining because it’s a pretty hilarious part of an episode. Great show though, it manages to pull off a seemingly slice of life style of things as each episode is pretty much it’s own unique storyline with events carrying over to the start of the next episode only twice… but there is an underlying storyline that’s told in a very, very round about way. But it’s got comedy it’s got action it’s got magical girls, it’s got transformation sequences, it’s got payapaya, it’s got explosions, it’s got ninjas it’s got… card battles? Takes cues from some of those shows that parody other anime and well incorporates it as a serious aspect of the show, well, serious for this show anyway. :p In retrospect I probably shouldn’t have mentioned shoujou-ai because it’s really not a part of it. It’s used as a gag a couple times but Simoun the show is not. (fyi: Simoun is a show with ships that are powered by yuri and space/time distortions, the entire planetary population is born female and the only ‘men’ being those that choose to turn into them after they turn 18.)
