Manga splurge

October 24, 2008

Well, after spending the work week in “The City” I raidied the local book store every day after work and managed to aquire the entirety of the Pretty Face manga. Which I recalled hearing about a whole bunch somewhere around eight years ago, when it was new and not in english form yet. A particular piece of the Megatokyo (www.megatokyo.com) mentioned it in a blog of his on the comics site and iirc he translated it to a script form. So I saw it on the shelf and figured “oh, hey, I think I heard of that.” And indeed I had.

Pretty face is about a dude named Rando. He’s this absurdly strong little guy. Very violent and well everything you’re not supposed to be. He has a crush on this girl blah blah blah, enter horrible bus accident and he wakes up looking exactly like the girl he likes. Because his face was screwed up so horribly it had to be entirely reconstructed… and they found the picture of that girl in his wallet and crazy scientist guy made him look like that. It gets way better from there; the girl Rando likes, Rina, had a twin sister, and they think he’s her. he plays along for zod only knows what reasons and decides he’ll go looking for Rina’s real sister, whose name is yuna btw, and yeah. Most of the comedy here is the result of the fact that Rando is now a trap…. ie, a ‘girl’ who is actually a guy. (The polar opposite being a reverse-trap, girl who looks like a guy. See “Fujioka Haruhi” of Ouran Highschool Host Club for an example)

Apart from those 6 volumes I picked up Welcome to the NHK vol 2, the Third vol 2, and yubisaki milk tea vols 6 & 7.

The Yubisaki is entirely an impulse buy. >.> Volume 6 had some art on the back that made me pick it up and well yeah. I’m weak to dfc okay?

On a much more random note I also picked up Iced Earth’s new album “The Crucible of Man: Soemthing Wicked Part 2″ Yeah I know, not anime related at all, but hey they did do an entire album centered around spawn, who as we all know originated in comic books… which is essentially what manga is. Because we all know “graphic novel” is just a facy way of saying either, comic book, or picture book but picture book doesn’t serve my devices near as well. >.>

Minami-ke!

October 8, 2008

Well I found out I’ve been listening to this shows OP theme as a remix by EXIT TRANCE which was a nice surprise when I finally cranked episode one on t6today after work. (Yes, I have a job now… I’m a contributing member of society. Yes, quake with fear.)

Anyway, great show for a slice of life show so far. Episode one consists of one girl trying to kiss her sister for pretty much absolutely no reason and then later she gets a love letter from some random guy in her class and proceeds to kick him in the shin the next day… because her insane little sister told her it was basically a letter of challenge in code. :D No screenshots or anything because I’m tired and I’m lazy and I still have to have a shower before I go to sleep in an hour and fifteen minutes so I want to squeeze as much anime in between those two things as possible. -.-; Oh I found this show thanks to some wonderful people in the MAL (myanimelist.net) irc chatroom. Someone asked if I’d watched it yet and well I hadn’t picked it up for some reason that only zod knows. They told me it owned so I had to pick it up, very to my interests. Like Lucky Star meets Ichigo Mashimaro, just with less loli.
